Modafinil

Top 5 Benefits for Those with Chronic Sleep Disorders

Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting drug used to treat excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and idiopathic hypersomnia. It has several advantages over other drugs that promote wakefulness, including a lower risk of side effects and no rebound sleepiness.

In 4-week studies, Modafinil significantly improved objectively measured wakefulness and patient-rated sleepiness (ESS) compared to placebo. Headache was the most common treatment-emergent adverse event.

1. Increased Energy

In clinical studies, Buy Modafinil Australia improved overall sleepiness and functional status in patients with narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome.1 It has also been shown to improve wakefulness in patients who are taking continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea.2

It is not intended to replace adequate sleep, but rather to treat excessive daytime sleepiness as a result of narcolepsy, SWD, or OSA. People who continue to get adequate sleep should still follow their doctor’s recommendations for healthy sleeping habits.

Modafinil is different from CNS stimulants in that it does not produce the typical subjective feelings of elation and heightened alertness associated with some CNS stimulants, but rather increases wakefulness without producing shakiness or nervousness.

However, it is important to note that Modafinil can have a negative impact on mood and anxiety when used for long periods of time, so it should be taken in moderation. It is also recommended to avoid consuming alcohol or smoking when taking this medication. Modafinil may also interact with certain medications, including antidepressants and sedatives.

2. Better Focus

Modafinil is used to improve wakefulness in people with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), or shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). Research suggests that this medication may also help increase performance and improve functioning.

Modafinil has been shown to improve processing speed, verbal learning, and memory in individuals with narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea. However, the improvement in verbal learning was likely due to a decline in placebo group performance.

This medication may make you dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. It may interact with certain medications, including birth control pills, narcotics, and antidepressants.

3. Better Memory

Studies in a variety of animal models have demonstrated cognitive-enhancing effects of Modafinil. For example, pre-treatment with Modalert 200 mg increases the increase in extracellular serotonin levels induced by the antidepressant drugs fluoxetine and imipramine in the awake rat.

Modafinil also dose-dependently enhances working memory performance on a delayed alternation task in rats, without altering exploratory activity or anxiety-related behavior. Two studies of obstructive sleep apnea patients found that 8 weeks of Modafinil 200 mg/day significantly improved self-reported measures of vigor-activity and fatigue-inertia compared to placebo. Modafinil was associated with modest reductions in anxiety, but no significant differences were seen on the California Verbal Learning Test, Degraded-Stimulus Continuous Performance Test or Trails Part B tests.

In one double-blind study of 20 patients with schizophrenia, a course of Modafinil 200 mg/day added to concurrent atypical antipsychotic medication significantly enhanced performance on digit span and a version of the Tower of London tasks relative to placebo. This was associated with increased activation of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortices measured by fMRI.

4. Increased Mood

Modafinil helps you stay awake during the day when you have narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), or shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). It does not cure these conditions and will only be effective as long as you take it. Talk to your doctor before using this medication if you have any other conditions.

Across several large, double-blind, placebo controlled studies, 200 to 400 mg of Modafinil daily significantly improved objectively determined wakefulness on the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) compared with placebos. Modafinil also significantly improved patient-reported vigilance, activity, and function on the FOSQ and reduced sleepiness levels in patients with OSA who were taking CPAP therapy.

In addition to increasing your energy level, Modafinil may improve mood and enhance cognitive functioning. In a recent study, researchers found that Modafinil has significant positive effects on the mental tasks of planning and decision making, flexibility, learning and memory, and creative problem solving. The study was published in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology.

5. Improved Sleep

Modafinil increases wakefulness and enhances performance during sleep deprivation, but it does not restore normal sleep patterns. It does, however, improve quality of life and overall health for people with chronic sleep disorders, especially if used in combination with other treatments like CPAP.

Modafinil exerts its stimulant effects by enhancing neurotransmitter activity in the brain, including the TMN and ventrolateral preoptic nucleus (VLPO). These areas are active during waking and provide inhibitory GABA-ergic input to neurons mediating cortical arousal.

Several large-scale, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical studies have found that Modafinil significantly improved objectively determined sleepiness – measured by multiple sleep latency tests and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) – and reduced patient-reported snoring and daytime sleepiness compared to placebo. In the OSA study, patients undergoing CPAP therapy also showed improvements in sleep-related functional performance and quality of life with Modafinil treatment versus placebo.

While mean sleep latencies did not normalize in the narcolepsy studies, improvement in subjective measures of sleepiness and functioning, a 40-week extension study that found improvement in ESS scores for patients with moderate to severe narcolepsy, and diary data that show proportionally fewer reported accidents and falls in Modafinil-treated narcolepsy patients suggests that Modafinil has clinically meaningful benefits.
